Shotgun Players Ashby Stage - THE ELECTRIC BALLROOM -
Irish playwright Enda Walsh “What would the Virgin Mary make of all of this, I wonder?” one of the best lines from Clara. Go see this power piece,Beth Wilmurt,, Anne Darragh, Trish Mulholland, and Kevin Clarke are all brilliant in this very hope of connection dark comedy.
“The New Electric Ballroom” follow up to pay wright Walsh’s “Walworth Farce,” In both plays the memories of family are kept tight, to the point of over kill, more or less by the re-enactment of a shared tale that has become a sort of sacred yarn, although in the case of BALLROOM the tone is bleaker, and the family are women.
Breda and Clara are both in their 60s, but they are riff like adolescents on a first date, with slashes of blue eye shadow and lipstick turning their tales into parodies of youthful innocence. They still yell at each other with the timing of teenagers, but with tongues toned by their age.
There is a wonderful performance by Kevin Clarke as he recreates the BALLROOM.
This is a great cast and production -
